Statistics show that this area are one of the most popular tourist destinations in S.A. The region undoubtedly boasts a plethora of scenic beauty, with the Drakensberg and Maluti Mountains as backdrop. When the Basotho people, inhabitants of this part of the province and adjacent areas, including the Kingdom of Lesotho, first came into contact with the European settlers in the 19th century, the Basotho Wars broke out. Phuthaditjhaba, the place of the 'meeting of the nations', is flanked by the Golden Gate Highlands national Park, which is a tourist attraction all the year round.
